Geography

The United Arab Emirates, in the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula, extends along part of the Gulf of Oman and the southern coast of the Persian Gulf. Its neighbors are Saudi Arabia to the West and South, Qatar to the North, and Oman to the East. Most of the land is desert sands.  

Government

Federation formed in 1971 by seven emirates known as the Trucial States—Abu Dhabi (the largest), Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, and Umm al-Qaiwain. In addition to a federal president and prime minister, each emirate has a separate ruler who oversees the local government.

President: Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan; Prime Minister: Sheikh Muhammad ibn Rashid al-Maktoum 

Weather

The best time to visit the UAE is from October up until May. Daytime temperatures are ideal during November, December, January and February (around 24C) although the evenings may be a little cool (13C).

Language

Arabic; English is widely understood and Hindi and Urdu are common among immigrants

Currency

UAE dirham (Dh) = 100 fils. The dirham is pegged to the US dollar at a rate of Dh3.67:US$1 

Time

4 hours ahead of GMT
